1 November 1907 — Rome | |
Friday. 1st November [1907]. All Saints Day. Lady E. took Mrs E. to the service at St Peters & I went with Sir Edwin & Mr E. to the Doria Palace where we were received by the Prince who showed us the Palace himself. The pictures did not very much interest me except Velasquez Pope Julius which is kept in a little room alone & wh so fascinates one that it is with difficulty that one leaves it. One seems to be in the presence of the man & to almost hear him speak. We saw the private rooms where there are some fine family portraits & some wonderful tapestries– The Prince told us that the Palace consisted of about 960 rooms 7 courtyards & the no. of staircases he was not sure of. We were joined by Lady & Mrs Egerton & came back to the Embassy to lunch at 12.30 after wh the C.E.s left. | |
