9 November 1907 — Rome | |
Saturday. 9th [November 1907]. Our King’s birthday. In the morng I had a visit from Sra Pavan Sanderson, whom I had known at Abano. Kitty also came in & Lady Egerton made her stay to luncheon. It was a wet afternoon & I did not go out. I had been engaged to dine with Dss Sermoneta but she telephoned to put me off. There was a big dinner for the English to celebrate H.M. birthday—63 years old—my brother Arthur would be 2 days older than him! It was a man’s dinner. The only ladies present being Olga Egerton & I. Sir Edwin took me to dinner & I had on my right Mr Oxenham the English Chaplain. Mongr Giles sat on Sir Edwin’s left, Monsr Stanley & Monsr Stonor beside Lady Egerton. We merely drank “the King” standing—the dinner was served quickly & was good. Afterwards abt 60 more of the Colony came, amongst them the Alderson party. I made acquaintance with Mongr Giles who is very old—but seemed cheerful & to like a joke. The ball room arranged with flowers, plants & furniture & lighted with electric light looked very pretty—people seemed to enjoy themselves—chatted & walked about, had tea & left by abt 12, They had not been gone very long before a violent thunderstorm with torrents of rain broke overhead & continued for some time. | |
