10 November 1907 — Rome | |
Sunday. 10th [November 1907]. Sir Edwin drove me in the brougham to the Church service in the Babuino– Mr Oxenham gave the queerest discourse– He directed his attention to “Christian Science” & taking Mrs Eddies book read us out long passages of it wh he finally said he would refute in his sermon of next Sunday! Could anything be more provoking– One took no interest in the question & even had hardly heard of it. It almost appeared as tho’ Mr O. was trying to propagate the fallacies of the Christian Scientists. The Aldersons came to tea at the Embassy to take leave of the Egertons as they are leaving tomorrow for the N. on their way home. The Egertons & I dined with the Sermonetas. I had not seen the Duke for many years. He was very kind & greeted me warmly. He is now nearly blind– His hair & beard white. He is also rather deaf. The Dss is still handsome & most charming in manner. The Grazioli were also dining there. Their nice sailor son led me in to dinner. He has just returned from a cruise round England with wh he is delighted & he speaks English very nice. Sir Edwin dined at the . | |
