11 November 1907 — Rome
Monday. 11th [November 1907]. I arranged & packed my things for the start for Paris. Directly after lunch M. Tabet came & promised to work at once to help Lady Egerton about her home. He told me that in order to make an “opera pia” of the Cosmopolitan Hospital at Venice I must make the endowment come up to £2000 wh ensures 3 beds & that when that is done he will help me to do the legal part. Olga & I went for a drive by the Tiber wh we found very swollen by the rains of Saty night. Wood & trees were floating down & people were going out in boats to catch it for use. The water was brown & muddy & we hear that further N. bridges have been carried away & some trains delayed. We returned to the Embassy for 5 o’cl tea to wh the Spanish Ambr & his wife (Perez Caballeros) came & also Duke Canevaro. We dined with Ct & Css Zetchen at Pal. Venezia—that is Olga & I did. Sir Edwin dined at the Consulta an official dinner to celebrate the King of Italy’s birthday. When we got home I took leave of the Egertons as I leave tomorrow by an early train for Paris.
