16 November 1907 — Paris
Saturday. 16th [November 1907]. The Baroness had her 2 friends to dinner the Avv. Venezian and took us to the Italian opera where we saw “Lohengrin” performed– To me it is a dull opera—neither was it very well sung. The house was full & looked gay– Paris is not the place it used to be. The smell in the streets from the benzine used for driving motor cars is terrible almost sickening. The shops are not half so attractively arranged as they are now in London– The country is richer than ever but less refined in every way.
