4 December 1907 — Montacute House, Montacute, Somerset
Wednesday. 4th [December 1907]. A bitter cold day. I left by a morng train. At Yeovil I got a daily paper & was horrified on opening it to read of the sudden death yesterday of Cecil Alderson. Letters had said that he was not very well & had a fit of indigestion. On getting to town I heard that he had been suddenly worse on Monday. He saw the Dr only on the Saty but did not keep his bed till Monday & even then no danger was apprehended– Tuesday morning he had a fall trying to get out of bed—not long after they thought he was worse & telegraphed for another Dr. Suddenly there came a change & in a few minutes all was over. Kate & Eda & the district nurse were with him. Mary was away staying with Monty at Chesterton. Nellie & Charlie were sent for & went down that evening. Kate they say is wonderful. She would not allow us to be telegraphed to in order not to spoil the joy of the wedding—so kind & thoughtful is she in her grief.
