8 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 8th [January 1908]. I went to my 3rd bath at 10—already they have done me good & I no longer use a stick to help me up & down stairs. There was a fall of snow in the night and the roofs of the houses were white, but it soon began to rain & there was a slush in the streets. Abt 11 I had a visit from Signori E. Arbib & Av: Tabet. They brought me a telegram to show me from Sr Salvatore suggesting they should ask me to take a mortgage on his house & property in Venice. I was to guarantee £4000 to be paid on 15th May & he undertook to sell it before then so that I should have to pay no money. I said I would consult Capt. Wyld & telephone the answer in the evening. When Charlie came in just before lunch I told him & he was indignant & advised me to refuse which I promised to do. Nellie came up to town & lunched with me. Charlie lunched out & returned directly after to take Nellie out. I remained in all day as it rained & was so dark I had the electric light from 11 a.m. The Dss of Somerset came to see me abt 4.30—very excited & pleased because she has proposed my name for an order of St John as & Lady of Grace & I am to get it in March. It is very kind of her & I shall be glad to have an English order to put by the side of the Turkish one. She is a nice kind woman always ready to try & give people pleasure. She is laughed at in society because she is so naively happy at being a Duchess. It seems to me a harmless foible. Nellie returned to the Tile House at 6 & Charlie with her.
