22 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 22nd [January 1908]. I went to my 9th bath happy to think I am drawing near the end of them as they bore me so. Sigr Eugenio Arbib came to see me on my return still worrying abt the debt owing to his brother on the Venice-Murano affair. I soothed him & said I had last night written to his brother Salvatore saying I was convinced that all will come right in the end & that now Capt. Wyld is away nothing is to be done. Mr Duncan (C. Wyld’s friend) came to lunch with us. Lady Humphrey came at 3 to take out Nellie & the baby in her carriage. I went in a taximeter to 70 Addison Road to see Sir Edward Poynter who is better & up in his sitting room. He said he did not know whether the operation for glaucoma in his eye had succeeded but he had just been told he must have the other eye done but he is to go away for change of air—& have the operation on his return. Poor man, just now that his wife would have been a comfort to him, he is left alone with servants & nurse– I got into the wrong road when I left him & found myself at Notting Hill. There I got a hansom & got home soon after 5. Nellie & I had tea & Baby came down to the drawing room afterwards.
