25 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 25th [January 1908]. It is lighter again today—hardly any fog. I sat at home all day. Nellie went down to Tile House after breakfast & returned to tea. Sir Dom: Colnaghi was coming to lunch but excused himself. I read most of the day & began Lord E. Fitzmaurices Life of Lord Granville. I turned first to the references to Henry & found the author’s account of Lord G’s behaviour to Henry on his removal from Constantinople saying Lord G. had always been Henry’s friend & considered he was bound in honor to give him the Embassy at Rome—& had only not done so because he could not help it &c &c. This brought back the old memories & opened the old wound afresh & brought bitter tears to my eyes—reminding me of the injustice Henry had suffered—& all the rest of the day I have been very depressed– All those who played parts in the drama are now gone to their rest & one ought to bear no more grudges—but it makes me suffer still to look back on for Henry’s sake & I cannot help it. Lady Granville knows what I feel & I expect she has had this put into the Life of her husband as a kind of apology & so I must take it I suppose. Monty came to see me & sat some time telling me about the visit to Sandringham & how kind the K & Q were to him & how he had to play bridge every evening with the Queen. Alice Murray came in for a few minutes & we talked of her clever sailor boy. Mr & Mrs Bertram Hanson came to tea. He is my godson & has a post in Nigeria now. His pretty plucky little wife is very anxious to accompany him but he has only got the promise of half a house—so she must wait till he can get there & manage to find a whole house & then she will join him. At present there are only 3 Englishwoman there & all is very archaic but she intends to go there as soon as she can. Bertram seems a sharp sensible intelligent man & has already been in China & Uganda & is likely to get on.
