6 February 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 6th [February 1908]. Aline Lambton came to luncheon with Nellie & me. She went off at 3 & then Nellie & I took a walk to St James’ Square & called on the Dss of Buckingham who was in– On getting into the drawing room we found another lady waiting whose name I never found out. This made it embarrassing & after a short conversation which I found I had to keep going as the Dss was as usual absent minded– I gave the signal to Nellie for an early retreat. We went on to St James’ Place & called on Mrs Matheson whom I had known in Egypt when she was Miss Arbuthnot travelling with her queer Aunt Louisa Lady Ashburton who bullied her terribly. Now she is married happily & has 2 fat boys of 3 & 2. From there we walked on to Albemarle St & called on Mrs John Murray who also was at home. Nellie left me there. I did not stay very long as 2 ladies I did not know came in & after some talk on the new arrangements abt the “Times” Editors wh are very vague I went home. Connie came while we were at tea & little Katharine Wyld was playing as usual for a short time before her bed hour– Connie stayed to dinner & helped to make bead chains—& then left early—& so we to bed–
