19 February 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 19th [February 1908]. Cornelia went off to attend a meeting political at Cardiff at 9 a.m. I breakfasted in bed not feeling very well & got up at 10. Ivor was said to be less well today & slept late not coming down till 12.30 when we went out to walk on the terrace—his nurse went with us & waited about in case of need– He was rather confused several times—but was strong in his walking. I lunched with him & he eat well—better than I did as I had a headache. After lunch we again took a few turns round the terrace till at 2 Ivor went up to his room to rest & I to mine to lie down & sleep & try to get warm. The sun came out brilliantly & I was sorry not to be able to go out, but I went down at 4 to give Ivor his tea—& found him again walking with his nurse on the terrace. After tea in the hall Miss Green played & we walked up & down the hall till 6. Then he & I went & sat in Cornelia’s boudoir & I read the Evening Psalms of the day to him—after wh he said aloud devoutly the Prayer book Confession & the Lord’s Prayer & the Grace—& he went away upstairs with the nurse for the night. It is very pathetic to hear him pray & it nearly upset me– Every now & then he tries to say things & cannot remember the right words & he often says “I have not the power to find my words & explain myself.” It is distressing to see him trying to say things & to realize himself that he cannot explain himself. Miss Green & Dr Johnstone & I dined at 8.15—& Miss G. & I spent the evening in the study where I taught her a game of patience.
