20 February 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 20th [February 1908]. Breakfast in bed & down at 11. Ivory came down about 11 & we walked till lunch at 1 on the terrace with the nurse. After lunch we walked up & down the hall. Ivory seemed worried as to when Cornelia was returning. She came soon after two o’cl but Ivory had gone up to rest. I went with Miss Green to see some of the bedrooms & to look for a framed autograph of Henrys with an inscription he wished put over the Nineveh Porch. We found it in a passage hung up & we took it down & put it in Cornelia’s room– She just came in & promised to have it graven on stone & put in its place so we walked out together to look for the place in the porch. We went afterwards to the Tennis Court & to the kitchen garden. Cornelia wanted to give me some plants of cyclamen but the gardener was cross & said they would not travel so she merely ordered me some cut flowers for tomorrow. On our return I went into the Nineveh porch to take notes for Revd Patterson on the sculptures. I saw Ivor & Cornelia walking together on the terrace so I went round by the kitchen & river to the church that I might visit my Henry’s grave & was for a few moments looking at it from the Church Porch. It is a peaceful spot & I like to think that someday my ashes will be there & my name graven on the same stone as his. Came in to tea with Ivor & Cornelia & afterwards Miss Green played the piano & Ivor sat most of the time by her side listening– At he went away with Cornelia & I shall see him no more for a long time—if ever. Revd Mr Haney & his wife came from Upton to dine & sleep. He is an Egyptologist & an interesting man & good looking & explained to us his theories on hieroglyphics.
