23 March 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 23rd [March 1908]. I did not get up till lunch time—but Sister Chaffey came to see me to give account of the Cosmopolitan Hospital wh is now at work with several patients & everything satisfactory. I lunched at one & then went out in gondola to Hotel Victoria to see Baroness Reinelt who has been ill all the winter with repeated attacks of the gout. From there I went to the Giudecca park to the Eden’s garden & payed Mr Eden a surprise visit as he did not know that I had arrived at Venice. His garden was full of blue scillas, & daffodils & he gave me a large bunch of the latter. I went over the way to the Hospital & found everything is excellent order & a good many patients sailors & others. I sat a little while with a lady who has been here some time trying to recover from having followed the “Fletcher” system of starvation. Got home to tea at 5. Mr Montalba came at 7 to take over money I had to give him for the hospital acct. Went early to bed.
