24 March 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 24th [March 1908]. Sister Chaffey came at 8.30 & accompanied me & Baker to the station to see us off. We left by 9.55 train for Rome & got there at 11 p.m. Met at the station by Antonio the Embassy servant & by the big 6 ft. footman & the carriage. As we got to the door of the Embassy came upon the Ambassador who was walking back from the theatre. Miss Everitt the housekeeper secy met me at the door, all the servants smiled & bowed even the stately English butler. Sir Edwin came in welcomed me & sent me to my room where I had a good hot tea & Miss Everitt explained that Lady Egerton was still away in France on the Riviera & returns on Thursday– Sir Edwin had returned on Sunday. He came to my sitting room & sat chatting for a little while & then my box being unpacked I retired to bed. This will probably be the last time I shall inhabit these rooms as the Egertons will be leaving for good in the autumn.
