5 April 1908 — Rome | |
Sunday. 5th [April 1908]. Strike over which one perceived by the noise of the tram in the street on waking in the morning. I drove to morning church service with Sir Fred & Miss Milner & Sir Edwin. In the afternoon they all went out to a concert & I remained at home & wrote letters till 5 o’cl tea time when I went down to Lady Egertons sitting room & there was soon joined by Sophy Franqueville. When we had had tea together we went & sat in the glass porch till past 7 when Sophy had to return to her husband. Sir Edwin took the Milners to the Opera & hear Strang’s “Salome” which is a great success here. I preferred not to see a piece wh I feel must be almost blasphemous & is said to be indecent & I regret that Sir Fred should have let his daughter go to it. Olga had seen it & disliked it very much so we remained at home together & had a quite evening she drawing lace patterns & I making bead chains & telling each other of our early days & bringing up—curiously eno’ both of us having been brought up with a wholesome fear of our mothers. | |
