6 April 1908 — Rome
Monday. 6th [April 1908]. At 9.30 a.m. was ready to go off to the Pavilion where the Russian Bazaar was to be held (Padiglione dell’Orologio) as Olga had already started Miss Milner & I followed in a cab. We stayed till past 12 pricing & arranging our sweet stall. Directly after lunch we dressed & returned there. I went with Sir F. Milner. I took up my place behind our stall & remained there all the afternoon. A Russian gentleman sat next taking the money & keeping the accounts. I had a brisk sale & not as many goods as I should have liked. The Queen mother did not arrive till 4.30 & I had great difficulty in keeping eno’ goods for her to choose from. She went first into the large room where the tags were. When she came into our tea room she came straight up to our stall & shook hands with me—& then bought abt 20 lire worth. Then tea was served to her at a small table & different ladies joined her circle. One she looked across & gave me a sweet smile– When she left she came across to me again & shook hands. I thought she looked rather aged & bent today & pale. All the Roman ladies I have got to know here came & were pleasant to me. Sir F. Milner kindly brought me some tea which was refreshing. When the evening came I had very few goods left & we had taken abt 700 lire. Mr Whitaker took us all back to the Embassy in his motor & then conveyed me to the Hotel de Londres where I hoped to find Sophy & to arrange to dine with her– She was out so I went next door to see the Curtises & while with them Sophy came in & we settled that I should dine with her & the Curtises ditto as had been previously arranged between times. I had settled with the Egertons that I would dine out so as to have their servants free as they had all been hard at work serving tea at the Bazaar. We dined in the Franquevilles sitting room. I came home at 10.30 rather tired.
