21 May 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 21st [May 1908]. Typed & worked. Canon & Mrs Ragg brought their baby my godchild to see me in the morning. Carry Eden came to call directly after lunch. At 3 I went out in gondola to see Angela Reinelt & sat an hour with her & then went on to Lady Helen Vincents she having asked me to meet the Duke & Dss of Coburg who are here for a few days. They came with a lady & gentleman. The Dss who was a Glucksburg is a very pretty little woman with golden hair. The Duke is very plain with a mouthful of teeth. Both are pleasant & amiable. They are a very young couple but have already 2 children. He was brought up at Eton which he had to leave when he was chosen for 9 Duke at the death of the Duke of Edinboro’. They were in admiration of Lady Helen’s fine apartment in the Pal. Giustinian. The long central hall of our Venetian houses always strike foreigners. The Dss said her old house Glucksburg had been built after this same plan. After tea they departed & I went on my way. I went over to the Hospital in search of Ola, or Aline who had gone out on their own accounts but they were not there so I came home. Had letter by afternoon post from Sir Edwin Egerton saying he hoped to come here for a change as he has been ill & they may start tonight.
