23 May 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 23rd [May 1908]. The Egertons had announced themselves here this week. Yesterday they telegraphed to say they could not come—& today Sir Edwin’s letter arrived telling me he could not leave this week & must try & get a villa near Rome. It was rather a dull morning & the storm still hung about. Mr Byard lunched with us & entertained us vastly with Anglo Venetian gossip, especially the account of the Polignac-Meyer feud. How Princess P. having quarrelled with her most intimate friend Mme Meyer had bought her apartment over her head &c & when he left us at 3 we were all just going out when it came on to pour with rain & we had to stay at home. This morning Mini sat to me for the head of my little figure & I got on with it a good bit. Aline dined at the Hospital leaving Ola & me en tête à tête.
