25 May 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 25th [May 1908]. I walked with Aline to Arbibs in the morning where the sale of his antiquities is going on & we sat in the garden. He also took me into his bead room & made me a present of beads for chains. After lunch Marchese & Marsa Visconti Venosta came to see the pictures. He is a fine old man still erect & active. I had not seen him for many years when I remembered him as the friend of Minghetti, Morelli & my husband there in the Govt a great lover of art & always well dressed. He had been very much to the fore in the making of the unity of Italy. He was delighted with the pictures here which he had never seen. His wife, a daughter of Marchese Alfieri is a good deal younger than him. I spent a very pleasant hour with them & felt in touch with old times. When they left I had to hurry off to the hospital where there was a committee meeting at 4. Mr Eden happily came to it, took the chair & helped much. In the midst of it Marchese & Msa Cassis came in having just arrived in Venice for a few days– We went over to the Eden garden where the roses are just now in their glory. Got home abt 7—all very tired.
