27 May 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 27th [May 1908]. Dr van Someren came in the morning to announce to me that an American lady Trevor by name had sent him £100 for the hospital a great windfall. We agreed that it should be invested at once. So afternoon I went over to the Eden’s garden to speak to him about it & we agreed that the money should be invested at once & that I should make over to him the money I made at the Bazaar in London that we might make up the                to £2000. From the Giudecca I went to Hotel d’Europe where I found Sir Arthur Fanshawe. He had sent me word in the morning that he had had a telegram from India to say his son had died & I could not bear to think of his remaining amongst strangers in an hotel. We came down to speak to him in the gondola & I persuaded him to come to stay with me– He arrived just before dinner. I went on to the Frari & paid a visit to Sra Malagola. She was receiving her friends in the garden—a very pretty spot full of roses in flower & over shadowed by the Church of S. Rocco. Directly after dinner I went to Hotel Victoria to pick up Bss Reinelt—& we went to hear the Conferenza of Prof: Fradeletto at the Goldoni theatre. The place was crowded & he was enthusiastically received. His subject was “Venice” & the great interest of the evening was his attack of L’Annunzio’s “Nave.” I did not admire his communication—it was affected but he was very fluent & his voice powerful.
