30 May 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 30th [May 1908]. Ing: Radaelli came to see me in the morning that I might arrange with him to finish paying for the building done at the hospital to enlarge it. He will come again on Monday for the final cheque. I went to lunch with the Curtis’ where Lady Margaret Leith is staying—an old friend—& a charming woman. She married a man who has “neurasthenia” & nearly out of his mind with nerves. She has been a devoted wife & is now only away from him for a short time to get a little rest. I knew her when she was a child “Poppet” Ashley—grand child of the Lord Shaftesbury & the plaything of Sr Giles. I fancy hers has been a sad life since. Met also nice Americans Mr & Mrs Mintern passing through Venice. I came home after lunch & rested till tea time when Dss Canevaro, Elsie Cassis & her husband & Marchesa Cappelli came. The Cassis are leaving tomorrow. I went out for a row—visited the Montalbas & took out Hilda & Ellen in gondola—deposited them at Hotel Rome to pay a visit & then returned home. Georgie & Miss Birds dined with me.
