11 June 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 11th June [1908]. Sra Malagola came at 10. Carry Eden called at 11. Revd Dr Good & his sister at 12. After lunch at 3 Olga & I went in gondola to Hotel Victoria to pay a visit to Angela Reinelt, then she went to Jesurums & I went to Missiaglia to talk to him about the pearl necklace he sold Lady Vivian at Easter wh English jewellers declare to be fresh water pearls! He denies this & offers to take them back. I fetched Olga at Jesurums & we went in gondola to Quattro Fontane to the Montalba cabin. It was a lovely row—a beautiful afternoon as we went along talking & I working at bead chains. Olga unfolded her plans for the summer how they would remain with me till next Thursday & then go up to the Catore & stay at Borca on their way to Homburg. She is very anxious about Sir Edwin & no wonder, for he is far from well & still feels the effects of the stroke he had about 3 weeks ago. It makes my heart bleed for her. I remember what such anxiety is. She is very brave. He has a mania that he must walk a great deal in order to keep well. He & Mr Whitaker walked this afternoon to the Giardini & there took the steamer for Sa Elisabetta to join us at Quattro Fontane. We all met at Mr Montalba’s cabin & he gave us tea there. I saw that Sir Edwin was not well & looked distressed so we did not stay long. Olga & he returned to Venice by the steamer & Mr Whitaker accompanied me in gondola as far as the Piazza where I left him & went home. In the evening we played patience in wh Sir Edwin joined. I wrote to Cornelia putting off my visit to Canford from 20th to 27th.
