12 June 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th [June 1908]. Olga came & sat with me in the studio. Ola went out for a walk with Sir Edwin in the morning. Visits after lunch from Marchesa Castelnuova (dama of Pss Letizia who is now in Venice) from Duchessa Canevaro & Polly Clary. At 4.30 went out in gondola with Olga & Aline called at Hotel Milano for Mr & Mrs Erskine of the Brit: Embassy at Rome & took them out with us. I got out on the Zattere to pay a visit to old Genl de Horsey who has just arrived here from Hyères. He looked well—but very old & his white hair hung down his back. But he was active (& courteous) as ever though he said his blindness had increased & he says he can now see very little. My party had gone to the Eden’s garden & I joined them there after leaving the Genl. Sir Edwin was also there & he & Olga returned home by the steamer & on foot. I sent out the Erskines, Mr Whitaker & Aline to sup on the lagunes in my gondola. They started from the Edens’ garden & I returned home by traghetto & on foot reaching home just in time for dinner. Was glad to find my walking power much improved—& I think my rheumatics must be passing off.
