15 June 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 15th [June 1908]. The Erskines came in the morning to see these pictures & invited us to go to take tea with them in the Piazza which we did about 5—all except Ola who expected the Montalbas to see her. Sir Edwin joined us there on foot. He does not like going in gondola & likes taking a lot of exercise. In the evening we had music. Prof: Trombini came to accompany Dss Canevaro who still sings delightfully. She came accompanied by her son Josè, who has lately returned from Siena. He is a strange looking man– He spent 3 or 4 years in Peru where he says he took to drink! as all men do there!! & has been very ill in consequence. He is rather repulsive looking, but has engaged himself to one of the house of Mocenigo (Bianca) & from all accounts the marriage has not the chance of being very happy—especially as it is said he is already in love with Bianca’s married sister. Marchesa Cappelli also came to hear Ersilia sing. She sang “Tre giorni son che Nina” which was a great favorite of Henry’s & she used to sing it to him 20 years ago.
