16 June 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 16th [June 1908]. Ola left to return to England to St Leonards where she is matron of Catherine’s Home. I went to Hotel Victoria to bid Angela Reinelt good bye. She is leaving Venice tomorrow & I promised to lend her my gondola to convey her to the station. At 3 the Egertons, Aline, Mr Whitaker & I went off to the Zattere in gondola where Ersilia Canevaro had an Arsenal steam launch ready to take us to the Island of Burano. She & her niece & Count Marcello accompanied us. It was very pleasant going there & we got some nice cool air—a relief this very hot scirocco weather. We landed at Burano & went straight to the schools. On returning to the launch, we met the party of Princess Letizia (Dss d’Aosta) who had also come to see the lace school. Count Marcello here left us & accompanied the Princess. I had never met her before. She is a big woman of rather a vulgar type & very smartly dressed. She had a lot of people with her, amongst them Marchesa Cappelli. We stopped in the narrow streets & exchanged greetings & I was “presented”—& then went our several ways & we returned to Venice. An excellent tea was served us en route. We landed at Sta Croce & went to the Eden’s garden– Sir Edwin went with me to see over our hospital wh he approves of & then returned home alone. I went to join the others in the Eden garden & returned home with them.
