30 June 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 30th [June 1908]. Walked with Ivor who is not well yet– After tea I accompanied Cornelia in the motor car & we went to Witchampton where she paid a visit. It is close to the entrance of the park of Critchell where the Stuarts live, abt 5 miles from Wimborne—a lovely drive. On our return I & Nela walked up to the kitchen garden & there Cornelia joined us. We went into the rose garden where the flowers are splendid & just at the height of their beauty. We looked at the nectarines in the houses—saw the vegetables being watered as the drought is so great that there would otherwise be none & the garden has to be regularly irrigated. We went out after dinner & were surprised to find it quite light at 10 p.m. & a curious pink light in the skies above the horizon to the N. We began to wonder whether it was the aurora borealis. There was a fire on the heath visible from our windows—a goodly blaze.
