6 July 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 6th [July 1908]. How sad is Canford now—with all its beauty. I am sitting writing here in the big tent on the terrace overlooking the sunk garden bright with flowers in the sunlight—& the others all gone over to a political meeting at Yarrells—while poor Ivor is in his house—not caring for anything or understanding much– My life is behind me– I think of many merry days spent here in our youth when life was before us– One must be thankful for all we have had & look back with gratitude to God– Tout passe! This place is very lovely at this time of year & when it is fine & warm as now. Before we were any of us married we used to be here in the summer & Ivor used to have a housefull & there was much playing of cricket matches by day & of dancing in the great hall in the eveng & we enjoyed ourselves in a simple way & were not worried by thoughts of politics or ambition. I am spending a quiet day here– Corise & the Chapmans came over just to lunch– But everyone went off in the afternoon to a political party at Yarrells & I remain happily; walk now & then a little with Ivor & sit in the tent. At 6.30 I read the Psalms to him & then he retired to his room. Cornelia came home abt 8. We dined at 8.30. Oscar did not return till late. Cornelia played patience & I looked over.
