7 July 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 7th [July 1908]. Breakfast with Cornelia at 9.30. Wrote letters. Ivor came down much confused & disturbed. At 11.30 Oscar and I went off in the motor car to Inwood—a lovely drive via Spetisbury & Blandford, Stalbridge to Henstridge. We reached Inwood at 1 o’clock. Theo & Aura received us cordially. Lunched at 1.45 & a shower of rain came on the first rain I have seen since I arrived in England. It came down heavily for a few moments & was still drizzling when we went off to the garden to walk through the glass houses. Saw there the plants grown from seeds I had brought from India—the papaw in fruit not yet ripe &c &c. The roses in the garden were in bloom, & great pots of sweet peas made a kind of avenue of colour– At 4 we had a cup of tea & took leave & started on our journey back. Oscar suddenly remembered that he wanted to go & fetch a spaniel he had got out being trained so when near Blandford we turned off & went past Handford &c over the downs—a lovely country till we reached the place where the dog was, near Horton Inn. The dog was found & we turned towards Wimborne bringing the little beast with us. We reached home abt 7 & found Cornelia just home from attending a meeting at Swanage where she had been making a speech. We dined at 8.30 & walked out for a short while afterwards but found it rather chilly after the rain of this afternoon. Played patience.
