14 July 1908 — 17 Cavendish Square
Tuesday. 14th [July 1908]. I went off to Fortnum & Mason’s in the morning & Charlie Wyld took me into the city to Sir John Cragg’s office to consult over the sale of the V. Murano Co. Louis Du Cane met us & there was a great confab in our room while in the next was Sigr Barbon & his friends also confabulating. I went back to Cav. Sqr & found Nellie Wyld also there at lunch. The next day Eda came up to town to see me about accompanying me to Carlsbad & we arranged to start on 23rd which was the first day we could get places in the train de luxe going there direct. I went to see Mrs Curtis & had a quiet talk with her about her future plans. She is going to America to settle her affairs & then returns to Venice in Octr where I hope to see her & to help her a little to recommence her life. Blanche was going out a great deal all this time & I remained quietly of an evening going early to bed– Gweneth who is very pretty & enjoys life immensely goes to many balls & Blanche has to rest after tea– She used to get into her dressing gown & lie on the sofa in her room when I would sit by her & read out bits of our mother’s old journals wh interest her enormously—but I must confess that I do not care for them: they are in such detail that it seems to me like opening a person’s private drawers– I know the feeling of that for I have had alas! to do it after the death of people I loved. I saw Lady Vivian (Louise) & dined with her one day– I went to the Franco British Exn twice with Blanche. The reproductions of the Indian Architecture is very fine & lucky the weather at the time I was there was hot & sunny which carried out the illusion. There was a show in the French department of French fashions. Figures dressed in the expense of an ugly fashion of Directoire time now becoming the rage. The result being that the flattened hips & stomachs & the tight skirts make women look more like a seal than a human being. There were quantities of French people in every direction of town all come over to the Exn & luckily we have a dry warm summer & London looks its best.
