18 September 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 18th [September 1908]. Went out after tea. Met old Genl de Horsey in his gondola—stopped & had a talk with him. Landed at Piazza & walked about some time for exercise. Met Hon: Algernon Bourke & had a gossip with him. He tells me “The Feud” between Bss de Meyer & Pss E. de Polignac rages high & that a good many English of the “smart set” are in Venice such as Consuelo Dss Manchester, Miss Muriel Wilson, de Meyers, Polignac, Dss of Westminster, D. of Marlborough &c &c. Shortly after I met Css Valentine Robilant née Mocenigo & offered her a lift in gondola. Discussed with her the question. She has taken the de Meyer side of “the Feud.” I recommended her to take no side & to avoid all friendship. She maintained she would do so & thought it right so I held my tongue & took her to Pal. Clary where she is now staying.
