21 September 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Monday. 21st [September 1908]. It was still dark when Baker came about 5 to call me. I hastened up & went off to the station & left by 6.15 train by wh time it was quite light. Had a carriage to myself & crochetted & learnt poetry to while away the time till I reached Monfalcone at 9.49. There I found Angela waiting for me & we drove to Sistiana wh takes about an hour. She had ordered a room for me to sleep the night but this I refused to do as I did not care to leave the Adys nor to rise again the next morning at 4.30 to take the early train home– Arrived at Sistiana found a lovely calm blue sea & bright sunshine. Had some refreshing tea & spent the rest of the morning gossiping with Angela sitting out near her villino. Her daughter Olga & son in law who are staying with her were of the party. At 1.30 Sr Fritz (her nephew & secy) came & we lunched in the villino—& then sat out again chatting. As I talked my eye always fell on something shining at our feet & on picking it up we found it to be a gold ring with initials & date engraved inside it—which is lucky as it will help to identify the owner. Soon after 5 we took tea & at ¼ to 6 Angela & I set off to drive to Monfalcone station– Just before we left a party arrived from Trieste to dine with Angela & others were expected so that I was the more glad I was not remaining the night as I shd only have had to be civil to people whom I did not know & should have been too tired to do much in that line. Angela deposited me at the station & hurried back to her guests. In the course of conversation today she complained of the greed of the Italian ladies & confided to me that Contessa Casanova lady in waiting to the Princess Letizia who was here all the summer had made up to her (Angela) tremendously & had ended by asking her 10000 fcs! soi disant as a loan which she naturally at once refused to her. She says “Ces dames sont vraiment trop interessées mais ce qui [illegible word] le plus c’est qu’elle doivent me croire trop bête.” It appears also that Baroness Gagern had also asked Angela for money (she is Princess Stefanie’s lady) & had at last succeeded in getting a couple of thousand francs out of her. To Ersilia Duchess Canevaro she gives 10000 fcs yearly!! All this is too pitiable. The train was rather crowded returning to Venice & was late. I arrived at 11 p.m. very tired & glad to get to bed. | |
