27 September 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 27th [September 1908]. Went to morning service with the Ady family, the Canon having gone on to church before us. The Bishop of Gloucester preached to us an excellent sermon. He deprecated the extreme rush of the present day & said that work which left one no time for meditation was apt to become “fussy philanthropy”—an excellent description of ones charities in the present day. The Bishop (Gibson) & his wife, his brother & friend all came to tea in the afternoon. At the same time Mr A. Ball & Mr Mark Milbanke, Mr von Essen Moberly & a Mr & Mrs Hillman (latter friends of Princess Charlotte Meiningen). Mrs Hillman is quite young an American & very pretty—a bride of 2 months & has studied singing & is coming out at Milan. They are taking an apartment in Venice. Baron & Baroness de Pury came also & then Baroness Knoop & her brother who brought introductions from Pss Thurn et Taxis. Mme Pezzè Pascolato closed the list of visitors. The Canon & I dined at 7 & then went off to the service at the sailor’s Institute for service. There was only one sailor & the Canon gave a short service. We sang hymns helped by the Royons, Baker & Florence my housemaid from Savile Row who is still here. Took leave of the Adys on going up to bed as they leave tomorrow early for Florence.
