5 October 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 5th [October 1908]. An old friend of the Guiccioli, Countess Pianell née Lutolf came all the way from Vicenza to see them. She is aged 86—but is quite active and lively & enters into everything with the greatest interest. She is small & slight & quite upright in figure. She was by way of going to sleep the night at an hotel which I, of course, would not hear of so she agreed to spend the night here. She arrived for luncheon & went out afterwards with us in gondola. She eat a good luncheon but only had a plate of soup for dinner. In the evening someone asked her if she was in the habit of going early to bed her answer was “All my life I have avoided taking any habits so that I can conform to anything.”
