18 March 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th [March 1909]. Canon Ragg gave his 3rd lecture today but I did not attend it as I went at 4 to the Municipio to attend the Ladies Committee for raising money for the poor of Venice. Happening to arrive at the same time as Iduna Belmondo we sat together. The meeting was held in the Sala dei matrimonie & all the ladies were placed in chairs in a row on one side of the room. The Sindaco, Count Grimani addressed us saying it is was necessary to concert some plan of raising money for the various charities in the town & begged the ladies to make some proposal of a fête or other means of attaining the object. Then began a general buzz—no one could hear or understand what was going on, especially at our end of the room. Happily during this time coffee was served & one got a good hot cup of black coffee, always so well prepared in Venice to sustain our flagging energies. It appeared from what the Sindaco said from time to time, that some were for a ball, some tableaux vivants, some a fancy fair—but no decision was arrived at & the meeting happily broke up– I conveyed Mrs Eden to her house in my gondola & paid Mr Eden a visit & then went home. Found Ola very tired & she retired to dine in bed. In the evening Malagola came in for a short time & then went off to finish writing the lecture he is to give on Saturday eveng.
