5 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 5th [April 1909]. Bss Reinelt told me a day or two ago that she had given a good talking to Bss Gagern at the want of courtesy towards her of Pss Stephanie—how she had never been to call on her or shown her any civility altho she (the Bss) had given large sums of money to the Pss’s charities & made use of her in many other ways. Of course this was repeated to H.R.H. who had offered to go & take tea yesterday afternoon & the Bss had said she was not well eno’ to receive her! I am amused how this old lady keeps people in order & even schools a Princess. She who is only born a workman’s daughter. With a clever head & a good fortune she can do as she wants. She told me today that after the offer of the Pss to go to see her, she has forgiven her & sent her flowers, bonbons &c! P. & Pss Bülow arrived at the Hotel Britannia to spend Easter week & to meet the Kaiser who is coming here on his way to Corfù. The Hohenzollern yacht & 2 other ships have arrived to fetch H.I.M. I called on Da Laura Minghetti who has come to meet her daughter but did not see her. It was still very windy so I did not go out into the Giudecca in gondola but walked from the Iron Bridge to Mrs Erams & had a talk with her. She is not now certain whether she will leave Venice yet. Ct Nasalli Rocca (the Prefect of Venice) dined with us & Malagola came in the evening. Ct Rocca promised to arrange Mme Waddington’s journey to Paris on Wedy as she wanted a reserved carriage.
