9 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th [April 1909]. Good Friday. I went off in gondola at 9.30 to San Daniele to see after the profughi– All going on well there & only about 66 of them remaining there. I got home before 12. After lunch had a visit from Mr Richard Waddington & his sister Mme Charles de Bunsen, Mme Waddington’s brother in law & sister in law. She is very deaf & uses a ear trumpet. M. Waddington who is a French Senator & has been a soldier in the English army is a shortish stout man of about 55—both speak English perfectly & without accent. Mme de Bunsen is widow of the Diplomat & has written books. I went over to the Hospital at 4 & had tea there. Oscar & Mr Talboy were over in the Eden’s garden, supposed to be reading—they joined us at tea. I went over to the Eden’s garden & found them the whole Bülow party taking a walk but I did not remain long as I had to go off to afternoon service at wh I arrived very late. I should have liked to have gone to a morning service but there was only one at 12 wh lasted 3 hours! These new fangled ways, imitations of the Roman Catholics are very trying to me. The high church party are spoiling our simple Protestant service, I think.
