4 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 4th [October 1909]. I got out my Hamond type writer & began to copy Henry’s letters to Mr Ross wh I have too long left unfinished. After lunch Mr Price came to see me to take over the keys of the institute which Royon sent up to my maid Baker. He had been told to leave them at a shop—but he confided to Baker last night that he was not going to give them up to an Italian! Queer man! I think we are well rid of him. We shall miss his wife who is gentle & charming. The daughter is like her father with a brusque manner. Mr Phillips called for me at 3 & I went to see some stone work at an antiquity shop he wants to buy & asks my opinion of. After that I accompanied him back to Grand Hotel where old Lady Pirbright was sitting out in the canal & I remained there with her for some time. It was very hot in the sun almost too burning. Camerino at the antiquity shop said the 2 marble basins Mr Phillips wants to buy was torn out of the piazza at Faenza because the aquaduct had been laid on & the basins were no longer required! It is thus that the Italians despoil their own towns under the idea of modern improvements! After chatting for some time with Lady Pirbright I went at 4.30 to tea with Mme Presbitero. Found there a small party—Olga Mocenigo née Windischgrätz & her sister Adine, Mr James, who played the piano, Mme Brazzà & 2 other American ladies.
