6 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 6th [October 1909]. Typed—used up all my paper & must now wait for more to come from England. Mr Montalba came to talk of Hospital money matters. It was drizzling all day but at 3 I went out in gondola to see Mrs Tracy (Mrs Hellman’s mother). Found the old lady in great agitation. Two of her daughters down with typhoid. She was very upset but gradually cheered up & said it was such a comfort to have someone to speak to as she could not speak to the Italian servants not knowing a word of the language. She is a victim of her daughters devotion & their love of music. They have studied singing & 2 Mrs Hellman & Adele, are on the stage & the old parents follow them wherever they settle. The Hellmans are now at Milan where Mrs H. is looking for an engagement to sing. Owing to Dr van Someren’s quarrel with our hospital he would not bring the sick girls there & they are now under Dr Keppich the German & he has sent them nurses. On leaving the Tracys I went home as it was raining. Dined at 7 & then took Baker & went to the Sailor’s Institute Concert—got up by Mr Price the chaplain. One of the Captains, Drury by name, helped by playing mandoline singing & reciting a poem of his own writing. One man gave a very clever imitation of a gramaphone.
