7 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 7th [October 1909]. Two Miss Everetts arrived from Rome to stay with me. One was lady help to the Egertons at the Embassy at Rome & is now assistant matron at the nursing home there. The other is governess to a Prince Labanoff at Grassé, both are on a holiday trip. I took them to see our hospital & then to get their 1st view of the Piazza. From there I sent them home in gondola & went to tea at Florian’s cafe with Mr Beigel & Mr Byard. Met there Olga Mocenigo & her sister Adine, Mme Presbitero, a Mrs Wyltes & Miss Donlas Pennent. As it was rainy we had to have the entertainment inside the café. Every luxury was served & I had 2 cups of chocolate! Mr Beigel is a professor of music & prepares singers for the theatre—a pleasant man. Mme Presbitero conveyed me home in her gondola. The Everetts dined at 7. I went at 8 to dine with Lady Pirbright at the Grand Hotel—met her nephew Mr Fandell Phillips & Mrs Bethune. In the evening Lady Pirbright showed us her magnificent pearls. One string not very large but even—over 2 yards long. One short one with pearls the size of large hazel nuts.
