13 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 13th [October 1909]. This afternoon I went out early in gondola to the Tracys & sat a little while with the old lady who is always good company. I went on to the Genl (de Horsey) taking with me the Italian newspaper with telegrams from London telling about the King having sent for Asquith, Lansdowne & Balfour, evidently with an idea of getting some political arrangement to stop the present conflict between the Lords & Commons. The Genl being blind he cannot read the papers & was grateful to have the last news– From there I went to see Mme Noce who is laid up with her broken leg—& then I walked quickly home having sent the gondola to the station to fetch the Hallam Murrays who came from Como to stay with me. Since Hallam was here in the spring he has been very ill at Florence. We dined at 7 & at 8.15 Mr James came & Mr Whitaker with his friend Mr Josephs & Mr W, took us in his gondola to the Sailor’s Institute where there was the usual Concert—& this time a very good one. Mrs Stainer sang, Miss Boyd played the piano—& also read a funny story. Mr Whitaker played the violin & a funny old Miss Wolsey recited.
