30 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 30th [October 1909]. It was a pouring wet morng. Olga & I sat in the studio all the morning & worked. It cleared in afternoon. I went to the Tracys & found the girls are quite convalescent. Thence I went on board the German training ship “Hansa” the officers of wh had invited us to tea. The 2nd in command Herr Walther received us very politely. Corise & Nela joined me there, there were a great many ladies of the foreign colony. Tea was served in the officers’ ward room and we sat at small tables. Then cigarettes were passed round & most of the women smoked so that the atmosphere from the heat & smoke became almost unbearable & as soon as I could I made my escape bringing Corise & Nela with me. We went to call on the Montalbas & who had invited us to go to them—but the servant told us they had sent me word that owing to a death they had put us off. It turned out that old Mrs Brown, mother of Horatio died yesterday. She had a stroke 6 months ago & has lain ever since almost unconscious. Her death will be almost a relief to her son, altho’ he was devoted to her. She was clever, but strange, & said biting things wh were often unkind. Very few people will regret her—but all will be sorry for her son who had devoted his life to her. I walked home with Nela & Corise. Mr Price came to tell me that Mrs B’s funeral will take place tomorrow at 12.30. Mrs Curtis & Mr James dined with us & the latter played the piano to us.
