3 November 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. [3rd November 1909]. Tho’ I did not get up early, I was better & about. In the afternoon I took Olga Egerton out in gondola. We went to the Hospital & I rejoiced the heart of the matron Miss Chaffey with the announcement that I am going to present the Hospital with a gondola. I have bought of old Genl de Horsey who sells it because he is leaving Venice altogether. We shall miss the kind old gentleman but know that he is right at his great age, to reduce his establishment and his cares. So his old gondola goes to the Giudecca & I went on to see him for a few minutes while Olga waited for me in gondola & so home to tea. In the evening she & I & Corise & Mr James, who dined with us went to the weekly concert at the Sailor’s Institute. It was not such a brilliant affair as the last, but Mrs Stainer was there & sang to them, Corise read, Olga & Mr James played the wedding march on the piano & many of the men sang.
