9 January 1910 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Sunday. 9th [January 1910]. Walked to morning Church with Edward. Typed on my return & finished the work of typing the part of my mother’s Journal wh is to be published. Mr Gillespie the Curate came to luncheon. Myles left here to stay for a night so as to hunt tomorrow. After luncheon B & I worked at making some notes required for the early part of the Journal wh took us till 5 o’cl tea time. I forgot to note that yesterday evening after tea Blanche & I walked in the dark to Piltown village to see a widow Knox to whom she carried various garments. Mrs Knox was duly grateful & proceeded to clothe herself in them & “since she likes to look decent when she went to chapel.” It was so dark out that we were glad to use a little electric lamp to light our path. Tonight we walked, accompanied by Edward to the evening service at 6, also with help of the electric lamp—but got in very late—only just in time for Edward to read the lessons, as is his wont– Home in time to dress for dinner. Yesterday it blew quite a gale—today it was not such a wild day—but there were frequent gusts & showers. After dinner Edward brought out on old dispatch box & we looked thro’ papers & letters of the Bessborough family dating from 1740—onwards. Some very curious & interesting. They talk of having a man down to put the archives in order.
