10 January 1910 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Monday. 10th [January 1910]. Drew patterns for lace work for Blanche in the morning after which we walked down to the village & paid a visit to the girls’ school. Heard the children sing (mostly rebel Irish songs wh are now taught). Blanche was indignant because hardly any of the boys whom we met coming out of their school, took any notice of her. It appears that there is a general socialistic order that they are not to take off their hats to the lady of the place. We hurried back in time for 1.45 luncheon with the 2 Oranmore children & Diamond Ponsonby. Edward was out shooting. At 3 I drove out with Blanche in her little pony trap & the nice little white pony “Mae”—the sky terrier accompanied us frolicking in front of the pony jumping up to his nose & barking. We went to some distant cottages in the hills where was a lovely view looking back on the river Suir. We came round by Templorum & the corkscrew road & did not get in till 5.30. Mr Hugh Beresford arrived before dinner & Myles returned. Did puzzle in evening. I received by post a box containing a photo of the Queen with her grandson P. Olaf of Denmark, as a New Year Present.
