15 January 1910 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 15th [January 1910]. Woke better—but did not get up till noon nor did I go out all day. Read Mrs Nortons Life– I remember meeting her at Sir Stirling & Lady Maxwells where Henry & I paid a visit there in 18??. Lady Anne was still alive but Mrs Norton seemed to take a prominent place. She was still good looking but stout & elderly. I thought her manner rather false—but she was kind & civil to me. Lady Anne had fits & nearly had one at dinner the night before we left. The 2 boys were abt 6 & 7 & crawled about under the dinner table with glasses of wine & water to the jeopardy of the ladies dresses. They were very intelligent about their father’s fine collection & even then could tell the dates & history of some fine silver flagons &c– There is a mention in the Life of Babbage the inventor of the calculating machine. I can remember his coming down to visit my mother once at Exeter House Roehampton then rather an old man I think.
