18 January 1910 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 18th [January 1910]. Eda who is staying with Lady Humphery (her Aunt) came to fetch Kitty & took her out shopping. I remained at home in the morning. We heard that Vere (Duncannon) has got in as M.P. for Cheltenham with a majority of 136 & we are all delighted that there are a good many Unionist gains which puts us in good spirits. Not that one can expect them to get a majority but that the Radicals will not so easily have their own way & that the country does not wish to be rid of “the Lords”. I went to luncheon with Mrs Whitaker at 26 Curzon St to meet the Italian Ambassador, Marchese San Giuliano. There I met also Genl Sartorius (Mrs Whitaker’s brother) a Mr Campbell (nephew) & Mr Lucas. The Ambr spoke of the impression it made on him that there is so much interest taken here in the elections especially by ladies. He is leaving London for the Embassy at Paris. He is in very bad health & very lame—& seems rather irritable & has not the usual geniality of his compatriots. I came away as soon as I could & walked home– The rest of the day it rained.
