27 January 1910 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 27th [January 1910]. I went off after breakfast to Cheyne Row to work at enamels– It was very cold & we found the water in the little enamel pans frozen in the studio in spite of the fire alight, but I worked away & got on well with the plaques for the neck I am making. Got back just in time for luncheon & found Connie added to our party. After lunch Blanche sent us her electric brougham to drive & Kate & I went to call on Mr Lane the publisher to talk over the publishing of my mothers Ceramic Journals. He received us lying on his sofa (8 Lancaster Terrace) as he had the gout. But as he talked & warmed up he forgot his lameness & went round showing us his little collection of English glass &c & his nice drawings by well known artists. His wife an American, was very civil & gave a cup of tea. While there the proofs of my mother’s book came in & he showed them to me but decided not to give them to us for the present but he gave me a dummy copy of the book to show the binding & I took it to Blanche at Cav. Sqr. She was in bed with a severe chill. I left this book with her & hurried home to tea where I found Mrs Bernard Shaw, wife of the play writer, & Mrs Wicksted, née Hammond with Kate & Lady Gregory. The former was a friend of our youth & we used to stay with her family at Westover in Norfolk. We had not met for 40 years & are both white headed & changed. Charlie dined out. Lady G. took Kate to the theatre & Connie came & dined with Nellie & me– She was very tired & I made her go home early. She had not been to her home since 11 a.m.! Very fatiguing & bad for her.
