13 March 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 13th [March 1910]. We all went to morning service at 10.30. Had a party of 10 to lunch viz Bss Reinelt & her relation Dr & Mme & and 2 daughters, Countess Poppadopoli, Sr Malagola, Ola, Nela & myself. After lunch we all adjourned to drink tea at Palazzo Poppadopoli. There was a tremendous discussion about a sensational trial of 3 Russians now going on in Venice. A young man called Naumow murdered two years ago a man here in Venice at the instigation of a Countess Jarnowska & another lover of her one Prilukoff. It is an abominable affair but all the ladies like to go to the court to hear it. Some how or other whether because they wear such big hats or because the Jarnowska has objected ladies are no longer to be admitted. It is probable that the last is the right explanation. She seems to be able to turn every man round her little finger. The 2 men in the trial are trying to get off by putting the blame on her—a mean trick. It is said all will be acquitted in some way or other. Our good friend the Prefect gave Nela a ticket of admittance last week & she heard the evidence of Prilukoff. Ola went with the Malagolas to hear Mr Weil give a lecture on English country houses. Nela & I entertained Princess Stephanie & Ct Lonyay at dinner & they left very early.
