12 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 12th [April 1910]. Mrs Hills came over from the hospital to have lunch with me & I had much talk with her—on social questions. I found her to have very odd ideas about the “upper classes” & that they all look down on anyone who has to earn their bread! I drew her attention to the fact that in my own family, one niece is a hospital nurse & one a dress maker—& one nephew is manager of a shop. She says she now begins to see that we do not sit idle all day & I told her also how we all do what we can to help our neighbours & that in the country proprietors look after those who live on the property. At 3 we went out in gondola, I to see Angela & afterwards I joined Mrs Hills on the Piazza—we took a little walk & then embarked at the Piazzetta & went to the Hospital where I left her. Mrs Curtis, Mrs Hoppin, Mrs Whitaker her son & niece Miss Sartorius dined with me—a few English came in—amongst them Lady Hilda Keppel, Miss Broderick, Sir Foster Cunliffe & Mr Spedding—but it was rather difficult to drag them thro’ the evening—there were too few of them.
