14 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 14th April [1910]. A dull cold day. Worked hard at making bead chains for sale for benefit of the hospital. Lunch party consisting of Lady Hilda Keppel & her friend Miss Broderick. Mr Horatio Brown, Mr Spedding (Comeriere to the Pope), Sir Foster Cunliffe the latter a very pleasant well informed young man. They all left before 3 when I went out & took Hilda over to the hospital which she had not seen then left her at her Hotel Calcina & came home as it was unpleasant out. Mr Whitaker came to consult me about the payment of his gondolier who demands higher wages, 10½ lire a day & 45 lire a month while Mr W. is absent. They are to have it on carta bollata written by a notary. I went to dine with Mrs Curtis & met Mrs Hoppin & Miss Sellar who are staying with her. We had great talk over our English politics. Happily the Irish party has split into 3—on the other hand Winston Churchill has now promised Home Rule to Ireland—& things look very black.
